The role of testosterone in the body
Testosterone is a sex hormone that affects many aspects of male health, such as sperm production, muscle mass gain, bone density and sexual desire. Interestingly, testosterone is also important for women, although there is naturally less of it in the female body than in the male body. In women, the hormone affects bone strength, ovarian function and libido.
A man begins producing testosterone as early as seven weeks after conception. The amount of testosterone in the body then increases during puberty, reaches its highest point at the end of the teenage years and then gradually begins to decline. After the age of about 30, it is normal for testosterone levels in men to be slightly lower from year to year.
How do you recognize low testosterone levels?
Too low a level of testosterone in the body can cause various symptoms in men, including: reduced sexual desire, lower energy levels, weight gain, a tendency to depression, low self-esteem, less body hair, and weaker bones.
The level of this hormone begins to decrease naturally with age. Middle-aged and older men can expect much lower testosterone levels than younger members of their sex. However, other factors can also cause a decline in natural testosterone levels. These include, for example, testicular trauma, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stress, kidney disease, alcohol abuse or chronic illness.
If you suspect that boosting testosterone levels may be beneficial in your case, it is worth consulting your doctor to check the amount of free testosterone in your blood. The use of testosterone boosters can be beneficial for many people, but when choosing to supplement, do so responsibly.
Effects of testosterone on muscle, fat and bone
Testosterone increases bone density and commands the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Men with very low testosterone levels may therefore be at greater risk of fractures. In addition, testosterone supports the proper functioning of fat metabolism, helping men reduce body fat. A drop in testosterone levels, on the other hand, can cause an increase in body fat.
Testosterone is one of many factors involved in the growth of muscle mass and strength. The hormone increases levels of neurotransmitters such as somatropin (growth hormone), which stimulate the growth of muscle tissue. It also interacts with nuclear receptors in DNA, resulting in protein synthesis. It is through this natural mechanism that our bodies are able to build muscle through exercise. At the same time, it should be noted that many men are thinking about improving their athletic performance in their sport or increasing their muscle mass by trying to increase their testosterone levels. With the health of our audience in mind, we strongly discourage this practice, both among athletes and less physically active people. Hormone levels among men should be monitored by experienced medical personnel. Particularly in the case of older men, it is important to carefully select therapy to meet individual needs.
Natural herbs as testosterone boosters
Many people ask themselves whether testosterone boosters work. While the composition of testosterone boosters can vary, many natural herbs are recommended for those wishing to keep their testosterone at optimal levels. Here are some of the herbal ingredients that can be found in testosterone boosters - so when choosing the best testosterone booster in capsule form, pay attention to its composition.
- Ground mace (Tribulus terrestris) - is a small leafy plant that has been used for centuries in traditional herbalism to improve libido and urinary tract health. Studies have shown that mace fruit extract used for two months by men with reduced libido improved sexual desire levels by as much as 79%17,18,19,20,21.
- Maca
root
- (Lepidium meyenii) - maca, also known as Peruvian ginseng, is a plant that grows on the high plateaus of the Andes. It has been cultivated as a root vegetable for at least 3,000 years. Maca was used in indigenous herbal practices to increase fertility and sex drive. These properties are also confirmed by today's research. In a 2002 study, the use of maca root was proven to increase natural libido in men, and a year earlier it was found that daily consumption of maca for a period of four months improved sperm production22,23.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) - is the most widely studied species of ginseng, found in Asia, where it has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. The root of the plant is used for supplementation. A 2018 meta-analysis of studies on various preparations containing plant extracts found that ginseng is particularly effective in alleviating erectile dysfunction 24. This effect is attributed to the ginsenosides that ginseng naturally contains in its composition25.
