Vitamin C powder

Vitamin C, commonly known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient. The human body needs vitamin C for a variety of basic functions, a key one being the proper functioning of the immune system.

In addition, vitamin C plays an important role in:

C
  • ollagen production
  • Nervous system function
  • Protection against oxidative stress
  • Energy metabolism
  • Iron absorption

Most animals and plants can produce their own vitamin C. Unfortunately, humans do not have this ability. This is why it is so important to take an adequate dose of vitamin C in our diet. One way to prevent vitamin C deficiency is supplementation.

Vitamin C for immunity

One of the main reasons why most people supplement this important ingredient is the effect of vitamin C on boosting their immunity. L-ascorbic acid (a.k.a. left-handed vitamin C) is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. How does it work?

First, vitamin C helps stimulate the production of white blood cells, called lymphocytes and phagocytes, which help protect the body from infection.1 Second, vitamin C helps these white blood cells function more efficiently while protecting them from damage from potentially harmful molecules, such as free radicals. Third, vitamin C is an essential part of our skin's defense system. It is actively transported there, where it strengthens skin barriers due to its antioxidant properties2.

Moreover, low levels of vitamin C have been linked to poor health outcomes. For example, people with pneumonia tend to have lower levels of vitamin C, and taking vitamin C in supplements has been shown to reduce recovery time3,4.

Can vitamin C help treat the common cold?

Many people believe that vitamin C can cure the common cold and its accompanying weakness. Unfortunately, studies have not confirmed this thesis, although it was noted that taking it reduced the severity of cold symptoms by 8% in adults and by 14% in children5. However, this does not diminish the role of vitamin C for our immunity. Vitamin C supplementation is especially recommended for people:

  • Taking part in extreme physical activity
  • Exposed to cold temperatures
  • Smokers

A powerful antioxidant

Our need for vitamin C is also related to its antioxidant effects, which can strengthen the body's natural defenses as it fights free radicals6. Antioxidants are molecules whose function includes strengthening the immune system. They do this by protecting cells from free radicals, which in excessive amounts can lead to damage causing a condition known as oxidative stress7.

Studies show that consuming a high dose of vitamin C can increase antioxidant levels in the blood by up to 30%. This helps the body's natural defense mechanisms fight inflammation, among other things8,9.

Collagen synthesis

Vitamin C's effects in the body include more than just immunity. It is also essential for the proper synthesis of collagen. Remember that its lower levels can lead to wrinkles, among other things. Vitamin C is well known for its effect on the natural production of collagen in our body10.

Support for the nervous system

Vitamin C plays an important role in the functioning of the human nervous system. It is needed for the production of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit information between nerve cells. It is especially important for norepinephrine, which plays an important role in the regulation of mood, stress and the functioning of the sympathetic nervous system11,12.

Vitamin C is also important for neurons because of its antioxidant properties. As an antioxidant, it protects neurons from the damaging effects of free radicals. According to studies, low levels of antioxidants are associated with impaired cognitive abilities13,14. It is also worth recalling that its effect on collagen production translates to the health of neural tissue, and therefore the brain.

Iron absorption

The properties of vitamin C can affect the absorption of iron by increasing its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Here's how it works:

Vitamin C
  • Helps convert iron into a form that is easily absorbed by the body. This allows iron to be taken up from food and delivered to the bloodstream.
  • Exhibits an effect that increases iron absorption by reducing the pH in the small intestine. Iron is better absorbed in an acidic environment.
  • It acts as a reductant and helps change iron into a form that can be easily transported in the blood. This is important for the production of hemoglobin, an iron-containing protein that transports oxygen to tissues.

Related to this, taking vitamin C along with iron-rich foods (e.g. meat, spinach, eggs) can lead to much better absorption of this element. It would be especially worthwhile for people who suffer from iron deficiency and want to improve their diet and iron absorption15,16,17,18,19 to pay attention to this.

Is it possible to overdose on vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, and many people reach for it in powder form to determine their own intake. However, it is possible to overdose on vitamin C.

Since our bodies do not make or store vitamin C, it is important to include it in your diet, such as as a dietary supplement. The recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 75 mg per day for women and 90 mg per day for men. During pregnancy, 120 mg per day is recommended. One measure of our vitamin C holds as much as 1,000 mg, while the upper limit for all adults is about 2,000 mg per day. Although too much vitamin C in the diet is unlikely to be harmful, high doses of ascorbic acid can have negative effects, such as:

  • D
  • iarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach cramps
  • Headaches

When determining your dosage, it is best to consult a nutritionist or family doctor who can help you learn about your body's vitamin C requirements. It is best to avoid higher-than-recommended doses of vitamin C, while if you accidentally exceed your daily dose, the excess should be excreted from the body with urine.
